The article examines the results of agricultural production under economic and social constraints during the COVID-19 pandemic. The main study purpose is to determine the factors that form the sustainability of the agricultural sector in times of crisis in the economy to stimulate their development and strengthening, as well as identifying the negative features of the agricultural sectors, reducing the growth rate of production and development of this type of activity. Based on time series, the peculiarities of the impact of crises in the economy as a whole on the production of agricultural products, the rates of changes in indicators of the conditions and results of crop and livestock production have been identified. The use of the method of groupings made it possible to establish differences in the response of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation to the pandemic crisis and to determine the location of production on a large territory with different climatic conditions as one of the favourable factors in the formation of sustainability of the agricultural sector. Dependence of agricultural sectors on imported resources (seed and planting material, herbicides, chemicals, etc.), as well as the low level of application of digital technologies in the production and sale of products, are noted as unfavourable, constraining factors.
