The article shows the multi-functionality of land management. The author proposes to distinguish three blocks of land management science – political, social, economic and environmental. It is considered that land management becomes more complicated with development of society.

The article assesses the results of functioning of the special economic zones in the Russian Federation. The correlation and regression analysis is carried out with the use of absolute and relative indicators: the number of registered residents, the number of jobs created, the total investments (including capital investments), and the number of engineering infrastructure objects that were created and put into operation. The authors underline an importance of such factors as size and amount of the state or municipal lands leased by SEZ residents.
