Alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) is easily found in a general hospital. It is found in the main part of patients sent for consultation of a psychiatrist. The AWS is a clinical diagnosis. It can vary in severity. In complicated cases patients have hallucinations, convulsions or delirium. The benzodiazepines have the best evidence base for treatment of withdrawal syndrome, the anticonvulsant should be considered as second-line drugs. Evidence favors the dosing regimen when severity of symptoms in severe stages is taken into account, where the initial dose is determined by risk factors for complex cases, and further dosing may be due to the severity of the syndrome. Also supportive care and the use of vitamins are discussed.
