An acute coronary syndrome is a pathological condition in which the blood supply of the myocardium through the coronary arteries is disturbed or stopped. The main cause of the development of acute coronary syndrome is the atherosclerotic lesion of coronary vessels supplying the myocardium. However, in 1973, N. Kemp first described the case of typical angina with normal coronary arteries. This syndrome was called “cardiac syndrome X”. Thus, “cardiac syndrome X” is a variant of ischemic heart disease, which is characterized by angina attacks with normal large coronary (supplying heart) arteries. A characteristic feature is the presence of multiple changes in the small coronary arteries, so the cardiac syndrome X is also called microvascular angina.
Italy’s healthcare system ranks second among European countries in terms of organization, availability and quality of health care. The health care organization is carried out at three levels – state, regional and local – as in many other countries. National Health Service delivers free health care to the population of Italy and is subordinate to the Ministry of Health, which is the legislative and supervisory body in the field of providing medical services. On site health care is provided with the participation of regional and local health institutions, and the funds are not always evenly distributed. Despite the fact that in 2001 the Italian Constitution was amended, according to which the “basic levels of health care” for the regions are set by the state, in most cases the regional authorities retain control over their own budgets and allocation of resources. As for most other European countries, Italy is characterized by large queues in medical centers and long waiting for admission to hospital, as well as for the comprehensive examination and planned surgical interventions.
