Alcohol abuse and the resulting alcoholic liver disease (ALD) are the leading cause of disease and death worldwide. The absence of symptoms of the disease at the early stages explains the diagnosis at the late stages. The main therapy for patients with ALD, regardless of the stage of the disease, is long-term alcohol abstinence. In compensated patients, the end results are the normalization of abnormal laboratory tests and reduction of liver fibrosis.
