Designing the latest architecture in a historically developed urban environment is the most important issue, where the idea of the need for a harmonious synthesis of modern and historic architecture becomes prevalent. This problem is caused by the latest innovative trends that arise in the course of architectural design, they are formed under the influence of aesthetic, cultural, financial issues, as well as technological progress.
The modern progressive urban environment is characterized by constant movement, development and diversity. Recently, the rapidly changing landscape of the world's cities is influenced not only by the latest technologies but also by innovative stylistic findings, as well as new urban planning concepts that are unfortunately not always successful because the main goal is often forgotten, that is the preservation of a specific historic heritage in the appearance of the city.
Having an original and inimitable appearance, architectural structures formed in different historical epochs and under different conditions are determined by the shape, plastic, structures, materials, which allow buildings of different historical epochs to be inimitable and unique objects.
Today, combining the old and the new is certainly more problematic and many times more complex than before. This is due to changes in the scale and technology of new construction, the need to solve some complex engineering and social problems and the onset of a completely new stage in the development of urban planning culture in the broadest sense of the word.
In the context of reconstruction or renovation of the existing urban landscape, architects should not only preserve its existing appearance adapting it to the needs of people, their way and the rhythm of life but also harmoniously combine it with modern architecture that should have stability, magnitude, expressiveness of the architectural language, etc.
Within the framework of this paper, an attempt is made to explore and identify the ways and possibilities of a harmonious synthesis of the old and the new taking into account the preservation of the integrity of the historic urban landscape and considering examples of the integration of modern buildings into the historic urban landscape.
